Choosing An Accessible Bank – Top Three Areas To Consider

You may not have thought about your banking situation, especially after a spinal cord injury, as there are many adjustments you must make such as learning how to use the wheelchair. One of the biggest aspects you must consider, is whether your current bank meets your needs. Is your bank accessible from a wheelchair? In this article we look at factors you should consider when choosing a banking facility as a wheelchair user.

Three main factors you should consider when choosing a bank when on a wheelchair:

Barrier Free Physical Facilities Outside The Bank

It is important to be able to get into the bank on your own.  You need to consider whether there are designated parking spaces for people with wheelchairs. Also, how accessible is the bank from the parking space. Your bank of choice should have wheelchair ramps, lifting platforms and automatic doors. The doors should be spacious enough to fit a wheelchair.

If the bank does not have ramps, they should be able to provide temporary ramps for wheelchair users. Some banks have drive through ATM’s that allow you to transact without leaving your car. Make sure that your bank of choice does not have structural limitations that may make it hard for you to access the bank.

Accessible Interior

The inside of the bank should have enough space to move around. You should be able to get service without struggling or even asking people to make way. Also make sure you can access the counters and meeting rooms.

Check out the bank policy on serving people with special needs. For instance, some banks have counters that are dedicated to people with special needs.

Online & Phone Banking Options

Choose a bank that offers both online and mobile banking. Most banks are now offering online and phone banking options. However, it is important that you confirm what services are offered through the mobile and online banking options.

While some banks have automated most of their services, others are yet to catch up. For instance, some banks have automated cheque banking by creating an app. The app allows you to take a photo of the cheque which is then deposited electronically.

As a wheelchair user accessibility is important when choosing the right bank. That means ensuring that your potential new banking institution has an accessible ATM and branch. In addition, it should have features like online bill pay or mobile apps for banking on the go. Does your current bank have accessibility features or you need to look for another bank.
